CM Furnaces for Nuclear Fuel Sintering

CM has been providing Sintering furnaces for the Nuclear industry for  over 50 years. We have built furnaces for almost every company in the nuclear fuel industry in the North American market. We have also shipped our furnaces to Europe and Asia to meet their nuclear needs.

The CM Furnaces 400 Series with an H₂ atmosphere is particularly well-suited for the sintering of nuclear fuel pellets such as UO₂ (Uranium Dioxide) or U₃O₈ (Triuranium Octoxide) pellets due to the following key reasons:

High-Temperature Capability

  • The 400 Series furnaces can reach temperatures above 1600°C, which is essential for achieving the high-density microstructure required in UO₂ fuel pellets.
  • UO₂ sintering typically occurs at 1700–1750°C, making these furnaces capable of handling the required thermal conditions.

Controlled Hydrogen Atmosphere

  • Reduction Process: The presence of H₂ gas is critical for reducing U₃O₈ to UO₂ during sintering.
  • Oxygen Partial Pressure Control: Maintaining a reducing atmosphere with hydrogen prevents hyperstoichiometry (excess oxygen), ensuring that the final UO₂ pellets have the correct O/U ratio (~2.00).
  • Prevention of Oxidation & Contamination: Hydrogen minimizes unwanted oxidation and ensures a clean sintering environment, free of contamination.

Excellent Thermal Uniformity

  • CM Furnaces are designed to maintain tight temperature uniformity, ensuring that all pellets sinter consistently, leading to uniform density and microstructure.

High-Purity Refractory Materials

  • The 400 Series uses high-purity alumina or molybdenum-based heating elements, reducing contamination risks, which is critical in nuclear fuel processing.

Continuous or Batch Processing Options

  • These furnaces can be configured for batch sintering (for precise control) or continuous operation (for large-scale fuel pellet production).

Low Dew Point and Moisture Control

  • A properly maintained dry H₂ atmosphere (low dew point) prevents oxidation of uranium and unwanted grain growth, ensuring the final sintered pellets meet nuclear fuel specifications.

The Nuclear Fuel Industry Depends on CM

The CM Furnaces 400 Series with a controlled hydrogen atmosphere provides the precise temperature soak, reducing environment, and contamination-free conditions required for optimal sintering of nuclear fuel pellets (UO₂/U₃O₈), making it a preferred choice for the nuclear industry.
